The New Mayor Pledges a 'New Era' for The Big Apple in Inaugural Address
During an inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani vowed to “reimagine” New York City, ushering in “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.
A Historic Mayor
The young political star, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first mayor born in Africa. He also made history by being the inaugural to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.
“A time such as this seldom arrives and even more uncommon is it that the people themselves whose hold the mechanisms of progress,” Mamdani remarked.

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a socialist leader and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my principles for worry of being called radical,” he said to loud cheers.
The swearing-in was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by political ally Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's election as a victory over political establishments.
An Ambitious Blueprint
Mamdani now undertakes one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform promising:
- Universal childcare
- Fare-free public buses
- A rent freeze for approximately 1 million households
- A experiment of city-run grocery stores
The estimated $10 billion price tag of these programs may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the city's top earners and corporations. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the cooperation of Governor Kathy Hochul.
Managing Political Headwinds
The new mayor must contend with apprehension from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.
Mamdani has moved to address these tensions by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.
On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding federal funding. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was described as unexpectedly friendly.
The Basic Tests of Leadership
Traditionally, New York mayors are judged on their success in delivering city upkeep: trash collection, curbing the rodent problem, repairing potholes, and making sure reliable transit service.
Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, citing historically low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with murders reported.
As his administration starts, Mamdani and his wife will move from their Astoria apartment to the stately Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed friendly ghost in the home, which reportedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”
Mamdani concluded his speech with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
