Fresh analysis suggests that patients who come off new weight-loss injections like semaglutide or tirzepatide may regain shed pounds at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a major medical journal shows that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while on the medication, the mass comes back at an estimated rate of nearly a kilo each month upon discontinuation.
"Individuals buying these medications need to be informed of the risk of fast rebound weight gain when the therapy ends," cautioned lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
That rate of recovery suggests a reversion to original weight in about one and a half years.
Weighing Approaches
The study, which looked at dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of GLP-1 agonists with older methods.
Researchers note that people who lose weight through diet and exercise usually experience a less rapid creep back—approximately 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Rapid Regain
Experts believe the mode of action of the jabs accounts for the amplified regain.
The injections mimic a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which helps regulate feelings of fullness.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the system to produce less of its own natural hormone, and may also reduce responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Discontinuation of this GLP-1 'fix' results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating a significant risk."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines suggest the jabs for individuals with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
Professionals argue that, due to the significant potential of relapse, the treatment should be considered long-term.
This opinion is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who state that the results "highlight the long-term character of obesity," similar to managing diseases like diabetes.
User Testimonies
Individuals who have discontinued the medication describe a powerful return of hunger.
"It was like something that goes on and you become ravenous," recalled one woman.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not established lasting lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Widespread Use
Figures indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the past year, with interest being substantial.
- Use is higher among females than males.
- The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are powerful tools for weight loss, they are not a standalone fix and long-term success likely depends on ongoing behavioural support.
