A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has caused the fatalities of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and execution of the country's flagship infrastructure initiatives.
The crash occurred on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a route built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was intended to establish an competing rail corridor to the Panama Canal, intended to promote commercial progress in the area.
“We shall thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this incident,” declared the national leader.
The official confirmed that, of the some 250 passengers on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The president added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.
Flagship Project of Former Government
The Interoceanic Train was a cornerstone infrastructure project of the previous administration, whose presidency ended the prior year. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic agenda for the southern region.
Another massive railway undertaking from that time, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also part of the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economy of a comparatively less developed part of the country.
Project Execution and Risks Apprehensions
The development of both railway systems was managed by the armed forces, marking a dramatic expansion of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid pace, surpassing forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this rushed timetable had concurrently raised persistent questions over construction quality.
- Sunday's derailment was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train this year.
- This includes an previous collision this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also experienced two non-lethal derailments.
Demands for Review and Suspension
In the wake of the tragedy, the leader of a major opposition party urged an prompt halt in the development and management of all such projects.
This pause was requested pending a full safety audit. The party declared that the tragedy "requires prompt explanations."
In reply, the head of state insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these national initiatives.
